Sanco sends best wishes to Mandela's lawyer George Bizos

The South African National Civic Organisation (Sanco) on Sunday wished struggle icon and human rights lawyer George Bizos SC a speedy recovery following his admission to a Johannesburg hospital after he was injured in a fall at Wits University.

“His principled leadership‚ wise legal counsel and cardinal contribution towards the reconciliation‚ nation building and social cohesion project as well as reclaiming the values that underpinned the struggle for liberation is still needed‚” said Sanco national spokesperson‚ Jabu Mahlangu.

Mahlangu said that Bizos represents a generation of fearless and selfless leaders that stood against the might of the apartheid state.

“It could be argued that he saved the late President Nelson Mandela‚ Govan Mbeki and Walter Sisulu from receiving the death sentence and going to the gallows during the Rivonia treason trial‚” he said.

He said that his organisation is confident that Bizos will bounce back to good health.

“He is a great fighter‚ a defender of the defenceless‚ conscience of our nation and a humble patriot that deserved the Freedom of Johannesburg award he received along with struggle stalwart Andrew Mlangeni who was in hospital and couldn’t attend the ceremony to accept the award‚” Mahlangu said.

The 87-year-old fell and hit his head two days after receiving the award during a public lecture at the university‚ and was admitted to the institution’s Donald Gordon Medical Centre in Parktown on Thursday afternoon.

The university’s student newspaper‚ the Wits Vuvuzela‚ reported that after the fall‚ Bizos was bleeding from his neck and was helped to his feet by guests who attended the lecture.
