Two men have been arrested for causing a massive fire broke at a petrol station north of Durban at the weekend.

KwaZulu-Natal police said on Tuesday afternoon that the men‚ aged 45 and 56‚ were being held in police custody following Sunday’s fire‚ in which three fuel trucks were completely gutted and one nearby house was burnt.

The N2 freeway at the Mvoti Ultra City‚ about 60km from Durban‚ was completely closed to traffic because of the fire and the thick black plumes of smoke that rose from the three vehicles.

While it was not initially known what caused the blaze‚ police’s Lieutenant Nqobile Gwala said on Tuesday: “Investigations were conducted and it was established that three trucks were parked with an intent to steal the diesel. The generator which was used to pump the diesel accidentally sparked and the fire broke out.”

The two men were set to appear in the KwaDukuza Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday afternoon.
