Three school children killed in collision between bus and bakkie

A bakkie ferrying school children has collided with a bus near Umlazi outside Eshowe in northern Kwazulu-Natal‚ killing three of the pupils and seriously injuring seven others‚ the province’s department of transport reported on Wednesday.

The victims‚ who were from the Gcwalulwazi High School‚ were all travelling in the bakkie. The bus was carrying no passengers at the time.

Two boys and a girl aged between 14 and 16 died in the accident.

The department said there were strong indications that weather conditions might have contributed to the crash.

A case of culpable homicide had been opened‚ it said.

KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport‚ Community Safety and Liaison Willies Mchunu expressed his shock at the deaths of the three school children and urged motorists to exercise caution as heavy rains were expected to continue in the province for the next few days.
