A father who has been a teacher for 21 years is considering quitting his job to look after his 15-year-old daughter who is apparently being intimidated by a taxi driver.

According to the girl's father who lives in GaRankuwa, north of Pretoria, the 44-year-old driver is harassing the girl after he allegedly impregnated her. The father cannot be named to protect his child's identity.

He told Sowetan that the taxi operator had been having an affair with his daughter since 2013 when he started transporting her and other pupils to school.

She fell pregnant in November 2015. The operator then allegedly bought abortion pills for her from backstreet "doctors".

"At one stage he [taxi operator] tried to convince my child to sleep with a younger boy so that she could pin the pregnancy on the boy," the father said.

Although the driver was arrested a few weeks ago, he has apparently continued to telephone the teenager.

"Other people who work with him have also intimidated her to drop the case. I have not removed her from the taxis because I felt doing so would put her on even higher risk," the father said.

The father said he believed that by staying home he would be able to monitor his child's movements better.

"My child is not safe. If I resigned I would be able to go and check on her at school to see if she is fine.

"I'm not able to do that if I'm at work as I'd be forced to ask for permission from my manager whenever I want to go to my child's school," he said.

The teenage girl's family said the taxi driver did not show any questionable signs when they hired him to take the girl to school.

However, in 2014 the father's colleague, whose children were also using the same transport, warned him that the driver was paying too much attention to his then 13-year-old daughter.

"I confronted my daughter but she dismissed it. But I got worried when I saw funny WhatsApp messages between them where he referred to my child as 'baby'," the father said.

"She started behaving funny and keeping to herself last year November."

The girl only confessed to her family about the affair last month after her mother discovered an empty packet of abortion pills and a letter addressed to the taxi operator in her school bag.

The letter reads in parts: "Every time I think about it I cry, even at school. I never thought that things like this can happen to me. I wish that by loving you and giving you my virginity you will be my world, but I guess I was not thinking straight."

The pills she was allegedly given did not work and her family took her to a clinic where the pregnancy was terminated legally .
