We are not here to discuss an 'illegitimate' president - Malema

Economic Freedom Fighters leader Julius Malema on Tuesday refused to speak about what he called an "illegitimate" president's State of the Nation Address (Sona).

"We do not recognise him due to his incapacity, lack of direction, association with criminal elements, unaccountability," Malema said during the Sona debate.

The firebrand leader told President Jacob Zuma he was incapable of being a president.

He went on to list a number of so-called errors of judgement, often hitting below the belt.

"This is a man who knowingly had sex with an HIV-positive woman and said a shower cures it.

"This is a man who knowingly impregnated a friend's child, knowing he had other wives at home. This is another sign of your misjudgments," Malema said.

Others listed were the appointment of ministers who were said to have close relationships with the politically-connected Gupta family, and the "disastrous" changing of the finance minister.

We will never sing 'Die Stem'

Malema has vowed that his party will never sing "Die Stem", despite it being part of the national anthem.

Malema was replying on Tuesday to a complaint from Deputy Justice Minister Thabang Makwetla.

Makwetla earlier called for the EFF to be called to order for not respecting the "Die Stem" part of the anthem.

This was after EFF MPs sat down during parts of the singing of the national anthem during President Jacob Zuma's State of the Nation Address last week.

Makwetla said this was in contravention of the Constitution.

Malema said the EFF members had made a decision not to sing that part of the anthem. "We will never sing Die Stem. No court can force us to sing a song of the apartheid murderers. We won't," he told Parliament.
