Prisoner killed, 2 cops wounded in cell shooting

A prisoner was killed and two police officers wounded at the Nyoni police cells in KwaZulu-Natal on Thursday, police said.

"The two officers went to visit the police cells and they were overpowered," Major Thulani Zwane said.

Two prisoners took the officers' guns and shot them.

Another officer then took out his gun and starting shooting at the prisoners.

One of them was killed. The second fled and was still at large, he said.

IPSS Medical Rescue's Paul Herbst said one of the officers was shot in the face and the other three times in the abdomen.

The prisoner died on the scene after an officer in the charge room shot him.

The wounded officers were taken to a clinic by their colleagues where emergency services treated them.

They were then taken to an airfield.
