R400 bail after allegedly raping granddaughter

A 76-year-old man was granted R400 bail after being arrested for allegedly raping his granddaughter, 33, multiple times during the past year, Eastern Cape police said on Monday.

The man appeared in the Ngqamakhwe Magistrate's Court and his case was postponed to January 18 for further investigation, said Captain Jackson Manatha.

The woman lived with her grandmother, who was separated from the grandfather. The grandmother had been sending her granddaughter to clean the man's house and wash his dishes at his home in Mkiva village, Ngqamakhwe.

The woman kept the abuse secret as her grandfather allegedly threatened to kill her if she told anyone. The alleged rapes took place from January this year until earlier this month. The abuse came to light when the woman spoke to social workers.

The man was arrested on Friday.
