Project Spider Web conspiracy claim baseless‚ says Treasury

National Treasury has dismissed as “baseless and vexatious” a document titled “Project Spider Web” alleging a conspiracy by the treasury to influence economic policy.

The document‚ in the form of an “intelligence report” reportedly attempts to smear top officials of the treasury and paint them as apartheid agents.

In a statement‚ National Treasury said it had become aware of the document that had been circulated in the media and condemned it in the strongest terms.

“The faceless people behind it allege a conspiracy to influence economic policy and the work of the National Treasury.

 “The document is baseless and vexatious. It appears calculated to sow seeds of suspicion and may be motivated by an unexplainable desire to undermine and destabilise the institution. The contents neither warrant a response nor further comment.

“The Treasury has passed it on to relevant authorities to investigate its source and will be transparent about the outcome of that process‚ once completed.”
