Prosecutors are ‘truth seekers’‚ says new NPA boss

The new national director of public prosecutions‚ Shaun Abrahams‚ has pledged to uphold the Constitution and to act “without fear‚ favour or prejudice“. He said prosecution “requires of us to execute our responsibilities impartially“.

Speaking at a meeting of prosecutors‚ Abrahams said: “I’ll be a slave driver. I’m a career prosecutor. I’m one of you. I stood where you stood. I feel the pain that you feel.”

He said he believed prosecutors were “truth seekers“.

“The NPA has been in the media for all the wrong reasons.”

Abrahams jokes: “I’ve aged in the last two weeks.”

Justice and Correctional Services Minister Michael Masutha said Abrahams was “a true leader at a time when the organisation desperately needs one” and that he would “lead the organisation out of the kind of stormy weather in recent months“.

He said President Jacob Zuma had decided on Abrahams because he was a “career prosecutor“.

“Welcome to the hot seat. Make sure you don’t burn‚” said Masutha.
