KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport‚ Community Safety and Liaison‚ Willies Mchunu‚ on Thursday called for extra caution by all visitors coming to the annual Durban July horse-racing and fashion spectacle this weekend.

Tens of thousands of visitors attend the event from within KwaZulu-Natal and other provinces with the majority using the busy N2 and N3 routes to Durban.

The integrated law enforcement team involving the department’s Road Traffic Inspectorate‚ the eThekwini Metro Police and South African Police Service will be on hand to deal with the sudden influx of vehicles.

Last year more than 27‚000 vehicles passed through the national toll plazas – and about the same number is expected this year.

“I would like to welcome the visitors and other travellers who will be in Durban this coming weekend.

“Furthermore‚ I wish to emphasise that all road users including motorists‚ bikers‚ cyclists and pedestrians‚ should exercise caution and strictly respect road traffic rules to ensure that we prevent accidents‚” said Mchunu.

Meanwhile‚ Mchunu has welcomed the sentencing of Njabulo Nyawose to six years with three years suspended who knocked down and killed world renowned cyclist‚ Burry Stander‚ in January 2013.

“The findings of the court indicate that Mr Nyawose disregarded basic rules of the road. And this is at the crux of our call for all road users to strictly adhere road traffic rules. Safety is paramount; it is about life and death‚ which means that we can’t take our life-saving rules for granted‚” said Mchunu.
