New SABC board chair undermines its independence‚ says DA

The Democratic Alliance has criticised the appointment of Mbulaheni Obert Maghuve as chairperson of the SABC board‚ saying that President Jacob Zuma has hastened the decline of the broadcaster’s independence.

The party on Friday described Maghuve as a “known acolyte” of Minister of Communications Faith Muthambi and SABC chief operating officer Hlaudi Motsoeneng.

“It was Maghuve‚ along with his new deputy‚ Leah Khumalo‚ who voted in favour of Motsoeneng’s appointment as chief operating officer in July last year‚” the DA said in a statement.

The president also appointed Khumalo the deputy chairperson of the SABC board on Friday.

The DA said Motsoeneng’s appointment contravened public protector Thuli Madonsela’s directive that he be suspended and disciplined for lying about his matric certificate and other alleged acts of fraud and corruption.

Earlier this year Maghuve removed Hope Zinde‚ Rachel Kalidass and Ronnie Lubisi from the SABC Board. The DA said Parliament’s legal advisers had regarded this decision as unlawful.
