Foreign dignitaries attend AmaXhosa king’s coronation

Dignitaries from throughout Africa attended the coronation on Friday of AmaXhosa King Mpendulo Sigcawu at the Nqadu Great Place in the Eastern Cape.

The coronation‚ which was conducted by President Jacob Zuma‚ was the first AmaXhosa coronation in five decades.

The last one was that of his father‚ King Xolilizwe Sigcau‚ in 1965.

The latter king died in 2005.

The Democratic Alliance’s Eastern Cape leader‚ Athol Trollip‚ on Thursday extended his party’s well wishes and congratulations to the new monarch.

“We trust that King Sigcau will play a positive role in preserving the rich history of the Eastern Cape and promote the rural development of his area of jurisdiction in an economically sustainable manner with all government sectors‚ the citizens that live in the kingdom and the private sector in order to combat rural poverty‚” Trollip said in a statement
