Sithole murder suspects back in court

The four suspects in the murder of Mozambican Emmanuel “Sithole” Josias will appear in the Alexandra Magistrates Court to apply for bail on Monday.

Sizwe Ngomezulu‚ Ayanda Sibiya‚ Sifiso Bhengu and Mfundi Mzimela made their first appearance on April 21 after being arrested following tip-offs from members of the community.

That appearance was marked by the arrival of several high-profile politicians and government officials in court‚ and a heavy police presence in the area around it.

Families of the men accused in the murder threatened members of the media outside the courtroom.

Sithole’s murder made headlines worldwide after it was captured by Sunday Times photographer James Oatway.

The images of the brutal death prompted police – against the background of an uptick in xenophobic violence — to offer a reward of up to R100 000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the culprits.

When President Jacob Zuma listed the names of the those who had lost their lives during the recent spate of attacks of foreign nationals‚ he said “Emmanuel Josias‚ who was identified by the media as Emmanuel Sithole‚ he was killed during a careless robbery in Alexandra township.”

Zuma said he had used a false name to avoid detection because he was an illegal immigrant.
