Stick fighting death prompts debate

The legality of stick fighting is in the spotlight after an 18-year-old died in a fight at Centane in the Eastern Cape and his opponent was arrested for murder.

Bonele Sidyono‚ 18‚ died during an Easter weekend contest while Zukisa Ndwayiba‚ 20‚ his opponent in the fight‚ was arrested and charged with murder.

Eastern Cape MEC for sports‚ recreation‚ arts and culture Pemmy Majodina expressed concern at the death‚ suggesting that the sport should be regulated with the participants wearing protective gear.

But the Eastern Cape House of Traditional Leaders and the Congress of Traditional Leaders of South Africa (Contralesa) questioned why Ndwayiba was charged with murder.

“If it was boxing or any other western sport like rugby‚ was the player going be charged with murder? The answer is definitely no‚” said Contralesa acting provincial secretary Chief Mwelo Nonkonyana.
