DA leader Helen Zille has decided to not stand for re-election as party leader at the DA’s federal congress on May the 9th.

The announcement was made by the leader earlier today in Johannesburg following a federal executive meeting.

“This has been a decision that was taken last week after consideration of over years,” she said.

“Very often people have asked me how long will you stay as the leader of the Democratic alliance and I have answered: “I will know when the time is right” and believe me I know that the time is right,” she added.

Zille who was elected party leader 8 years ago on 6 May 2007 told reporters that she would however continue serving her term as Western Cape premier and had no intention of leaving that post.

Her term as Premier is due to end in mid 2019 when the next election is due.

Zille’s announcement comes a month before the Democratic alliance holds its federal congress in Port Elizabeth.
