Ten Western Cape police officers, based at the Parow police station in Cape Town, made their first appearance on corruption charges in the Bellville Regional Court on Monday.
They each face eight charges of corruption, with the amounts involved totalling more than R10,000.
Prosecutor Tertia du Toit alleges that, on various occasions in 2013, they falsely informed victims that drugs had been found on their business premises, and demanded the immediate payment of fines to avoid arrest.
The officers initially appeared in the Bellville District Court, where Magistrate Cyril Croutz released them on bail of R5000 each, and transferred the case to the regional court.
In due course, they will go on trial before Magistrate Sabrina Sonnenberg in the Bellville Commercial Crimes Court, in accordance with a direction issued by the Western Cape Directorate for Public Prosecutions for all corruption cases involving the police or other government officials.
In the dock on Monday were Percy Claassen, 46, Randall Phillips, 28, Nicolaas Ryk, 38, Munier Daniels, 29, Alvico Carolissen, 28, Divan Webster, 30, Dudley Abrahams, 31, Casberth Tsiri, 30, Thembalethu Mazimela, 29, and Samkelo Mnyanda, 27.
They were warned to appear again on March 27.
