Woman arrested for dead babies in fridge

A 29-year-old woman was arrested on Tuesday after the bodies of four babies were found in a refrigerator in New Brighton, Mthatha, Eastern Cape police said.

"According to the post mortem, the doctor found a shoelace around the neck of one of the babies which indicates that the baby was strangled to death," spokesman Colonel Mzukisi Fatyela said.

"She claims that she is the mother of all four babies but we don't agree with her and DNA tests will be done tomorrow [Wednesday]."

She is expected to appear in the Mthatha Magistrate's Court on Thursday to face murder charges.

The bodies were found on Saturday after police received a tip-off. At the time, Fatyela said they had to break into the house because the owner was not there. The owner's backyard tenants told police she was in Johannesburg attending a funeral.

"Four newborn babies were discovered in a freezer. An inquest docket has been opened," Fatyela said at the time.
