Protesters in Mamelodi, Pretoria, blocked Nellmapius Road with rocks on Wednesday, Tshwane metro police said.

"The group burnt tyres, put rocks and other objects on the street early this morning. They ran away when the police arrived," Senior Superintendent Isaac Mahamba said.

He said traffic lights were broken and thrown into the street.

Pretoria Road between Simon Vermooten and Solomon Mahlangu roads was closed but later re-opened.

"Rocks and burning tyres are, however, still blocking the road and delaying traffic. The Tshwane metro police are on scene to help motorists," he said.

The group was linked to residents of Malemaville who wanted to occupy open municipal land along the old Bronkhorstspruit road.
