Gunmen abduct, behead Tunisian national guard officer

Tunisian security forces discovered the decapitated body of a national guard officer after he was abducted by gunmen, the Interior Ministry said Monday.

A group of 10 gunmen seized the officer after stopping the civilian car he and his brother were using in Kef province, north-western Tunisia.

The gunmen took the officer away when they discovered his profession from his identity card, a ministry statement said. They released the officer's brother.

The ministry did not indicate when the officer was abducted or when his body was found, but said that national guard and army forces were searching the area for the perpetrators.

Jihadist groups are known to be active in remote areas of western Tunisia.

An attack by gunmen on an army bus in the same area killed 5 troops in early November.
