Class of 2013 is the best: NUM

The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) congratulated matrics of 2013 on Tuesday for producing the highest pass rate since 1994.

"These are the outcomes of the gallant efforts of the parents, teachers and learners combined," NUM general secretary Frans Baleni said in a statement.

It encouraged the pupils who had passed to further their studies.

"Real knowledge develops on the basis of application and the more you can apply your knowledge and pass it on to others it becomes a skill... When you are ploughing back you must never be selfish about education," he said.

On Monday, Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga announced a 78.2 percent pass rate for the 2013 matric class.

In 2009, when Motshekga took over as minister, the pass rate was 60.6 percent.
