Satawu supports SABC leadership

The SA Transport and Allied Workers' Union (Satawu) supports and is satisfied with the SABC's leadership, it said on Thursday.

The national broadcaster was on a recovery path to credibility, said Satawu spokesman Vincent Masoga.

Parliament dissolved the broadcaster's former board and appointed its existing leadership earlier this year after infighting prompted all but one member to resign.

"Since the arrival of the current leadership of the SABC at its helm we have seen stability in terms of revenue bleeds and over reliance on government bailouts," said Masoga.

"The SABC paid back its debts and seemingly continues to be improving the living conditions of its workers."

He was commenting ahead of comments expected on Friday by Communications Minister Yunus Carrim in response to Public Protector Thuli Madonsela's report on alleged maladministration at the SABC.

Masoga said Madonsela should not be influenced by the disgruntled, former, allegedly corrupt employees and lobby groups criticising the SABC.

"The Public Protector must not be dissuaded from finding balanced justice for the SABC and its leadership by the disgruntled former SABC employees, some of whom have been disciplined for corruption and graft related deeds," he said.

Masoga said the board, with Hlaudi Motsoeneng as its acting chief operating officer, deserved a chance.

Earlier this week, Carrim said Motsoeneng's position could soon be advertised.

Carrim told the Cape Town Press Club negotiations were being held with a candidate who believed he should have been appointed to the post.

Carrim's spokesman Siya Qoza said this candidate was Mvuzo Mbebe, who was recommended for the job in 2007, but was not appointed.

Mbebe got a court interdict in 2008 preventing the appointment of a new chief operating officer.

Qoza said that when the job was advertised, Motsoeneng and everyone else would be free to apply.
