Man wounded by metro police

A man was wounded and arrested in the Johannesburg CBD on Tuesday night after shooting at metro police, a spokeswoman said.

"At around 7.50pm, metro police officers were busy in the CBD with a stop and search when a Volvo motor vehicle stopped," said Inspector Edna Mamonyane.

There were three men in the car. Metro police were searching the driver and a passenger on the back seat, when a passenger in the front got out the car and produced a firearm, she said.

The metro police took cover. The gunman got back into the car and drove off with the others. The metro police gave chase.

At the intersection of Harrison and Plein streets, the gunman threw himself from the car and opened fire on the metro police.

They returned fire, wounded the man in the leg and arrested him. The others escaped.

The man was under police guard in hospital, said Mamonyane. The others were still being sought.

"They hijacked the vehicle from Eldorado Park," she said.
