Commissioner condemns gun negligence

A 13-year-old accidentally shot his friend with his father's gun and then shot himself.

Mpumalanga commissioner Lt-Gen Thulani Ntobela has condemned negligent handling of firearms after the death of two boys last week, police said on Wednesday.

Two boys died on Friday in Ludlow Trust, Manyeleti near Hazyview, Brigadier Selvy Mohlala said.

A 13-year-old accidentally shot his friend with his father's gun and then shot himself.

The 11-year-old boy had decided to visit the 13-year-old boy at his home.

"It is alleged that the 13-year-old retrieved a firearm belonging to his father which was stashed underneath the mattress," Mohlala said.

"The boys played with the firearm when a shot accidentally went off and fatally wounded the 11-year-old."

The 13-year allegedly killed himself at the back of his parents' home.

Ntobela said the deaths were as a result of gross contravention of the Firearm Control Act 60 of 2000 under Section 120(8)(a) -- which states that a person is guilty of an offence if they fail to lock away a firearm in a prescribed safe, strong-room or a device for safe-keeping when the firearm is not in their possession.

The 13-year-old boy's father Shiboy Shipalane, 63, appeared in the Mhala Magistrate's Court on Monday on a charge of negligent handling of a firearm.

Shipalane was released on warning until September 27.
