Members of the community in Nellmapius, Pretoria east, have marched in protest against a R2 increase in taxi fares introduced by the local taxi association, it was reported

Aggrieved residents stopped taxis and off-loaded passengers as part of the protest on Thursday.

Taxi fare increases came into effect in parts of Pretoria on Thursday.

The cost of a trip from Pretoria central to Nellmapius was increased from R12 to R14.

Placard-carrying protesters, mostly women working in supermarkets and as domestic workers, told the newspaper that they could not afford the new fares as their salaries were too low.

Mamelodi Amalgamated Taxi Association spokesman Geelbooi Masemola told the newspaper the fare hikes were brought about by the increased costs of fuel and maintenance.
