'Driver' slain as car mows down three kids

A MAN was slain yesterday by furious residents after three children were killed and a woman badly injured in an apparent hit and run in Durban Deep, west of Johannesburg.

The unknown woman sustained serious injuries after she was run over by the car at Sol Plaatjie informal settlement.

A silver Honda Ballade, that had three occupants, then reportedly plunged into a group of children, killing three children and badly injuring four others.

Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department spokesperson Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said the children were between the ages of six and seven.

"The woman, whose age cannot be determined at this point, was taken to a hospital but we cannot confirm which one.

"However, the children were rushed to Leratong Hospital in Kagiso," Minnaar said.

The horror incident angered the community, who chased the car and killed a man believed to have been the driver of the car.

Minnaar said the other two occupants of the car were on the run.

"In the car we found alcohol that included whiskey, three empty beer bottles, brandy and gin. The matter will be investigated further."

Warrant officer Daniel Mavimbela confirmed the police were investigating cases of culpable homicide and murder.

"According to the information we have, a man - believed to be the driver - was killed," Mavimbela said.

"We also believed that there were other occupants in the car." - bambalelep@sowetan.co.za
