TWO women who survived a horrific accident which claimed 12 lives yesterday when a minibus taxi and a truck collided in the Vaal considered themselves very lucky.
Dineo Qathatsi, 32, of Stilfonteinkuma in Klerksdorp, in North West and Busi Magagula, 37 of Witbank, Mpumalanga, said from their Sebokeng Hospital beds that they did not see the accident because they were asleep.
Qathatsi, a security guard at Rio Casino, Klerksdorp, said they had left the Emmerald casino, where they had gone to play soccer and netball tournaments the previous day, when the accident happened.
"I was not even aware at the time that I was injured. I was only aware later that I was injured, and my brother had died. I am very lucky to have survived," Qathatsi said.
Magagula, a sangoma, said she had boarded the truck from Witbank, heading for Vanderbjlpark to attend a ceremony of an initiate sangoma.
"The driver had charged me R50. I then requested to sleep in the truck. Then I heard strange sounds from the vehicle. When I woke up I saw the driver running away from the scene," she said.
President Jacob Zuma said the country was saddened by the tragic loss of lives.
Police spokeswoman Constable Thembeka Koago said they were investigating a case of culpable homicide and reckless and negligence driving. - Additional reporting by Sapa
