HUMAN Settlements Minister and ANC national executive committee member Tokyo Sexwale's visit to Nelson Mandela Bay Metro was almost cut short after the region's chairman, Nceba Faku, reportedly tried to convince him to cancel his trip.
Sexwale was expected to deliver the fourth annual Nelson Mandela Memorial Lecture organised by the municipality, and to conduct wreath-laying ceremonies on the graves of fallen ANC struggle stalwarts Raymond Mhlaba and Govan Mbeki and members of uMkhonto weSizwe - who were among the first to be executed in 1964.
However, on Tuesday evening the team working with Sexwale was approached by Faku, who told them that the minister should not come to Port Elizabeth because people in the ANC leadership were saying he (Faku) was "pushing (for) Sexwale's leadership agenda".
A member close to Sexwale confirmed that Faku had phoned the minister, "begging" him to cancel his trip as he was "getting pressure from other leaders".
The wreath-laying ceremony had to be cancelled yesterday as "no direction" was given to Sexwale. It was postponed until today.
