Suspended jail for paying cop a bribe

A Western Cape man was given a three-year suspended jail term yesterday for paying a R4,500 bribe to a Hawks officer.

One of the mitigating factors for the sentence was that Waleed Diedericks had testified truthfully when Captain Esmeralda Bailey went on trial in the Bellville Specialised Commercial Crime Court.

This meant that if the commercial crime court ruled Diederick's testimony at Bailey's trial was not altogether truthful, it would amount to a violation of the condition of the suspension. He would then have to serve a three-year sentence.

Diedericks pleaded guilty to a charge of corruption in the Cape Town Regional Court on Wednesday.
