TB deaths drop

THE death rate of people infected with extreme drug resistant (XDR) TB in North West has decreased.

TB deaths dropped from 8.2% in 2009 to 7.3% in 2011.

Provincial health department spokesman Tebogo Lekgethwane said the province was the first in the country to complete the treatment of and to report a completely cured XDR TB sufferer.

According to Lekgethwane three more XDR TB patients were declared completely cured early this year.

But he said the late reporting of TB patients to health facilities and patients who continue to default with their treatment remained a concern.
