'Muggers' meet their match in two cops

They tried to rob the wrong people

THREE muggers got more than they bargained for when they robbed two plain-clothed policemen in Braamfontein, Johannesburg, yesterday.

In a scene that would remain etched in their minds for a long time, three robbers' world was turned upside-down when their victims turned on them with guns.

One man was shot as he made a dash for it after he and his two accomplices had mugged police officers who were off-duty.

The three had approached an unmarked police vehicle, brandishing knives and demanding cellphones and wallets.

The two officers handed over the items before the three men fled on foot. The cops immediately drew their guns and started firing. Then one of the muggers ran for a few metres before collapsing on the pavement.

The other two offenders were later caught, searched and arrested.

A crowd gathered around the area that was sealed off with police tape while paramedics and police officers worked hard to stabilise the wounded man and gather evidence at the scene of crime. The man was shot in the lower back and was attended to on the scene.

The cellphones and wallets he and his friends allegedly stole were placed next to the wounded man on the pavement.

He was still alive when he was wheeled into an ambulance and taken to the nearby Charlotte Maxeke Hospital.

Police spokesman Lieutenan Colonel Lungelo Dlamini said the men, aged between 25 and 26, were expected to appear in the Johannesburg Magistrate's Court on Monday.
