Municipality helps varsity stampede victim's family

THE Mogale City municipality in Gauteng will help UJ stampede victim Gloria Sekwena's family to give her a dignified burial.

The municipality has provided food, beverages and erected mobile toilets at the Sekwenas' home ahead of her funeral, spokesman Nkosana Zali said yesterday.

"We supply other kinds of support such as daily presence of our political leaders to provide emotional and psychological comfort," Zali said.

Gauteng premier Nomvula Mokonyane pledged to provide the bereaved family with counselling after the burial.

Sekwena, 47, was killed in a stampede at the University of Johannesburg's Bunting Road campus on January 10.

She had accompanied her 19-year-old son Kgositsile to see him through late applications at the institution.

Sekwena's memorial service will be held at the municipal hall tomorrow. She will be buried at the Sterkfontein cemetery on Saturday.
