Police arrest armed thugs

SIX men planning to stage an armed robbery in the Eastern Cape were arrested in Port Shepstone, KwaZulu-Natal police said yesterday.

Captain Thulani Zwane said the six were arrested after a high-speed chase and a shoot-out with the police on the N2 highway on Saturday.

Police received a tip-off and their car was spotted near Port Shepstone. When the car was forced to stop, two of the passengers got out and fired shots at police, Zwane said.

The police returned fire and the suspects fled. The remaining four passengers surrendered. Two unlicensed pistols were recovered.

The other two men were tracked down. They admitted to being on their way to commit an armed robbery.

They were expected to appear in court today.
