Good news a little too late for teacher

A dedicated teacher, who had recently been promoted to head of department, died in an accident before he saw the letter of appointment.

Edmond Maluleke, pictured, who taught at Ntsako High School in Malamulele, Limpopo, and who served his community diligently, died on Monday evening in Vuwani when his car overturned.

Local traditional leader Leonard Chavalala said the community was totally devastated.

"He was my adviser. The community relied on him a lot," he said.

Chavalala said the 37-year-old Maluleke was a hard worker and he had recently made an application to have a clinic built in their village. He said the teacher' s death had left the community distraught .

"He was a board member of Gingirikani Matsakali, a home- based care centre, which he had helped build after the community received a donation," he said.

His family showed Sowetan a letter from the education department telling Maluleke to report at Hlalukweni High School next January because he had been promoted to head of department.

Maluleke taught geography and Xitsonga at Ntsako High School where he achieved 100% in Xitsonga.

He was chairman of Sanco at Matsakali, secretary of the Thulamela ward 10 committee, sports secretary since 2006, a Safa Vhembe and Thulamela referees coordinator, secretary of Matsakali Football Club affiliated to Safa Vhembe as well as Ntsako High School's South African Democratic Teachers Union shop steward. Maluleke was also deputy secretary of the ANC Xiwamuseve branch.

"He was recently elected to the projects steering committee of Neighbourhood Development," councillor Eric Baloyi said.

"Maluleke epitomised selfless dedication to the service of the people and his death is a great loss to the family and the community," Baloyi said.

He will be buried at Matsakali Cemetery on Saturday at 7am.
