KWAZULU-NATAL police arrested 64 taxi drivers in the Mpumalanga informal settlement in Hammarsdale on Wednesday, the provincial department of transport said.

Sixty-two drivers were arrested for public violence and two for assault at the Mpumalanga taxi rank, spokesman Kwanele Ncalane said.

They were arrested after a confrontation between police and members of the Mpumalanga District Taxi Association.

Police received a tip-off on Tuesday that the association planned to disrupt operations at the taxi rank because they believed some operators were working there illegally, said Ncalane.

When the members assembled on Wednesday morning, police were already at the scene to prevent them from confronting illegal operators.

Ncalane said the drivers would appear in the Hammarsdale Magistrate's Court.

The department was trying to help resolve tensions between the two factions in the Mpumalanga TaxiAssociation, Ncalane said.
