Transnet justifies R10m paid to Gama

TRANSNET bosses yesterday justified in Parliament the R10-million paid to one of its senior managers while he was sitting at home.

Brian Molefe, chief executive of the transport and logistics groups, told a meeting of Parliament's portfolio committee on public enterprises the R10-million paid to Siyabonga Gama in salary, bonuses and benefits, included money that was due from as far back as 2008.

This would be a period that preceded Gama's boardroom fight with the previous Transnet board.

The Transnet chief rejected suggestions that Gama, who was suspended in 2009, fired in June last year and reinstated in February this year, earned the R10-million for doing nothing.

Molefe told MPs that a performance bonus due to Gama, which was suspended for three years as part of Transnet's incentive scheme, had to be paid to him this year in terms of the scheme.
