16 bust for drunk driving

SIXTEEN people were arrested for drunk driving in Western Cape over the weekend, the department of community safety said

MEC Dan Plato said 2794 cars were stopped and 1009 drivers screened as part of the Safely Home campaign.

A total of 16 motorists were arrested, 605 speeding offences were recorded and 387 fines were also issued over the weekend, he said

"I ... urge all road users to consider the consequences of driving under the influence and speeding for their own sake and the sake of others," Plato said.

He said five people had died in separate car accidents over the weekend.

"While this weekend's number of incidents and arrests might be just a statistic to many, it is not the case for those arrested and the families of those who lost their lives."
