11 shebeens shut down

ELEVEN non-compliant liquor outlets were shut down in Mafikeng at the weekend.

In a move aimed at regulating the sale of alcohol, North West MEC for economic affairs Tebogo Modise also fined 40 liquor traders close to R40000 for non-compliance in terms of the Liquor Act No 27 of 1989.

About 53 outlets were visited in the raid by the department, South African Police Service, department of labour and South African Revenue Services (Sars).

"My department will take strict measures to address the abuse of alcohol and non-compliance by liquor traders throughout North West.

"We will continue with these operations in all districts to enforce compliance and ensure that liquor traders act responsibly," Modise said.

"We have realised that most of the liquor traders operate beyond trading hours stipulated in the licences, while others make structural changes to their businesses without the consent of the Liquor Board.

"At some premises the sanitary facilities do not meet the requirements of the health regulations.

"Some licence holders employ foreigners without registering them with the Department of Labour and others were found with tax returns that were not updated as required by Sars," he said.

"These have negative consequences on the socioeconomic environment."
