Puzzle over teen's murder

MYSTERY surrounds the death of the teenage daughter of a national department spokesperson

Zanele Khumalo, daughter of Department of Water and Environmental Affairs spokesperson Themba Khumalo, was found naked and dead in her parents' Pretoria home last week.

Zanele, 18, was found dead in her bed on Thursday afternoon. Her blankets were pulled neatly over her body. There were no signs of forced entry to the house but her pyjamas and gown were missing.

Zanele matriculated at the Glen High School in Pretoria last year and decided to take a gap year before going to further her studies.

Khumalo said: "Neighbours said she was last seen with a man earlier in the day. A neighbour later sent her 8-year-old daughter to call Zanele. She came back and said Zanele was crying and had promised to come over later.

"When she failed to arrive the neighbour went to the house. Zanele partly opened the gate and told the neighbour she was fine.

"But the neighbour suspected something was wrong. She left and that was the last time she was seen alive."

Sunnyside police cluster spokesperson Warrant Officer Duane Lightfoot yesterday said they were investigating a case of murder.
