Rabies outbreak hits Joburg

THERE is another rabies outbreak in Lenasia, south of Johannesburg, the Gauteng department of agriculture and rural development said yesterday.

"An 8-year-old dog with no history of vaccinations was diagnosed with rabies symptoms in Lenasia south," spokesperson Mokoko Lekola said in a statement.

There was a vaccination campaign in the area last year following a rabies outbreak.

"The presence of rabies can be considered an extremely serious public health risk," said Lekola.

He said the department would launch large-scale vaccination programmes in the south of Johannesburg starting with Witpoortjie, Lindalo, Lindhaven, Dobsonville, Plot 8 (Emahlangeni) and Princess on March 10 and 11. The Lenasia south area would follow on the week of March 14.

Lekola called on all pet owners to ensure their pets were vaccinated.
