Swoop on 173 school bus operators

A WHOPPING 173 school transport operators have been prosecuted this week alone in the Eastern Cape.

Eastern Cape roads, transport and public works MEC Thandiswa Marawu held a blitz on unsafe scholar "contracts" as schools opened in the coastal province this week.

She said yesterday that 29 unlicensed drivers were caught and six who only had learner's licences and were transporting pupils without any licensed driver in the car.

Another 40 drivers were prosecuted for overloading their taxis, and another 24 for driving taxis with defective steering wheels.

Pupils were found crammed into 31 unlicensed or unregistered vehicles.
