How Joburg-based stars plan to spend their Christmas

AFRO-POP musician MXO is looking forward to attending some traditional ceremonies, including the umgidi (a homecoming celebration) of his nephew, who will become a man this December.

"After spending the whole year in Joburg I make a point of going home to Eastern Cape evert Christmas," he said.

"I enjoy my mother's cooking on Christmas Day. The house is always full of family members and relatives who work in other parts of the country.

"I love the chats we normally have as a family and going to the beach. This year is quite exciting cause I will also attend the umgidi for my nephew."

Award-winning jazz musician Phinda Mtya, also based in Johannesburg, has organised a Christmas lunch at Kings Beach with her younger sister, extended family and friends.

"There is no way I will spend Christmas Day in Johannesburg or elsewhere. Port Elizabethans have a certain way of celebrating Christmas," Mtya said.

"My husband is also into spending Christmas in Port Elizabeth. He enjoys all our Christmas visits to the city."

ANC Youth League deputy president Andile Lungisa said his Christmas holiday would start on Wednesday.

Lungisa, who hails from Motherwell, Port Elizabeth, said he would visit comrades, friends and family in Tsomo village, Port Elizabeth, and St Francis Bay.

Businessman Theunis Crous, who commutes between Johannesburg and Port Elizabeth, said he would return to the coast with his wife Primrose and children.

"I will definitely be spending the festive season with my family. I will also try to visit close friends and people I have not seen in a while," Crous said.

Isidingo actor Sisa Hewana will take a week off from his busy schedule to spend time with his family in Port Elizabeth.

"I've got a huge family. So I'll be visiting everyone I don't get to see during the year," Hewana said.

Triathlete James Cunnama will spend Christmas at "home" with a difference.

"I'm actually going to spend Christmas with a few friends. We are doing a long mountain bike tour - just the five of us - in Western Cape from George to a friend's wine farm in Ashton," Cunnama said.

"We will spend Christmas together on the farm,"
