Driver killed in KZN truck crash

A MAN was killed on Monday night when his heavy duty truck slammed into the back of another stationary truck on the M19 near Blair Atholl Road in Reservoir Hills, Durban.

Netcare 911's Jeff Wicks said they arrived on the scene and found one truck wedged against the back of another.

"The cab of the truck was completely crushed. The driver, apparently the sole occupant of the vehicle, died on the scene," Wicks said.

"His body was entrapped in the crumpled remains of the truck. The specialised rescue unit, police search-and-rescue officers and eThekwini metro firefighters had to work closely to extricate the body."

The fatal accident comes as the province's traffic police and paramedics gear up for yet another busy time on the roads. The exact number of deaths on the province's roads since the start of the festive season is expected to be released today.

Last week the Road Traffic Management Corporation said 170 people had died on KwaZulu-Natal's roads since December 1.

The RTMC said more than a million fines had been issued for various traffic offences across South Africa since October.

Several motorists had also been arrested for speeding and had been slapped with fines ranging from R4000 to R20000.

In total 3million motorists have been stopped and their cars searched since the start of the Department of Transport's new national law enforcement plan, spokesperson Logan Maistry said.

Earlier this month KwaZulu-Natal's acting MEC for transport, S'bongiseni Dhlomo, said the department would collaborate with long-distance bus operators and truck drivers to try and reduce fatalities on the province's roads.
