Police officer gunned down

A 30-YEAR-OLD police officer on patrol was has been gunned down in Soweto.

Warrant Officer Doctor Molemong and his colleague were chasing after a car in Emndeni yesterday when he was shot several times. He died instantly.

Police said the officers were patrolling the area when they saw a suspicious-looking white Toyota Corolla and gave chase.

Eyewitnesses said the Corolla suddenly stopped and a man climbed out and fired at the police van.

Molemong's relative who did not give her name said the family was too traumatised to speak to the media.

A source close to the investigation said the same Toyota Corolla was seen in the area about a fortnight ago.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Tshisikhawe Ndou said no one had been arrested.
