Radebe hopes to inspire with his story

"I WANT to be a role model for the coming generation of soccer players by sharing my story. I hope to inspire them," Lucas Radebe said at the launch of his biography yesterday.

Lucas: From the Streets of Soweto to Soccer Super Star was launched at Discovery Soccer Park.

Gary Blumberg, chairperson of the Lucas Radebe Management Company, highlighted the challenges Radebe overcame - from the boy who was sent to Bophuthatswana to escape apartheid violence in Diepkloof to his shooting injury and his departure for Leeds United.

The relationship between Radebe and Nelson Mandela is highlighted in the book. Mandela, who was visiting Leeds, told those gathered: "This is my hero," referring to Radebe.

"To this day, I cannot believe he said those words," Radebe said yesterday.
