Official opening of bridge today

THE official opening of a R3million pedestrian bridge today will bring relief to the villagers of Marite near Bushbuckridge in Mpumalanga.

MEC for public works, roads and transport Clifford Mkasi will open the bridge at Jim Brown Village next to Lapish Primary School.

"The opening of this bridge forms part of the Integrated Rural Mobility and Accessibility (IRMA) project aimed at addressing transport challenges in rural areas that impact negatively on socio-economic development," department spokesperson David Nkambule said.

The bridge will bring relief to villagers at Marite as they previously could not access basic services such as schools, health centres, pension payouts, graveyards and markets.

The IRMA is a government initiative which seeks to employ innovative means to address the difficulties facing rural communities in accessing basic services.

It will also reduce unemployment levels, facilitate an efficient and competitive logistics infrastructure while providing roads. Nkambule said Mkasi would donate 667 bicycles to rural pupils within the Bushbuckridge municipality.

The donation is part of a nationwide campaign called Shova Kalula bicycle programme that will enable pupils who walk long distances to get to schools easily.

The department will stage a provincial participatory education technique (PET) Competition at Thulamahashe tomorrow. The winners from the regional PET competition will tussle against each other for the provincial title and get big prizes.
