IFP and ANC clash over votes

POLITICAL intolerance between the ANC and IFP has surfaced in Ulundi, northern Zululand.

IFP councillor FL Buthelezi allegedly tried to disrupt an ANC meeting in Mahlabathini during the party's weekend campaign.

The campaign was led by national assembly member Don Gumede, regional chairperson Mkhawuleni Khumalo and Ulundi leader Makhosonke Msibi.

The ANC is conducting door-to-door campaigns as it prepares for local government elections.

The campaign was officially launched by provincial chairperson Zweli Mkhize last month in Newcastle.

Msibi said that Buthelezi stormed into a community meeting accompanied by a local induna (headman) and tried to disrupt the meeting.

"But to their surprise people refused to be removed from the meeting because they are tired of underdevelopment and regard the ANC as their only hope," he said.

The ANC called on the IFP leadership to discipline the councillor because his "conduct perpetrates political intolerance".

Msibi said they already have more than 10000 people who have officially joined the ANC in Ulundi and they aim to have 30000 registered members before the local government elections.

IFP provincial secretary Bonginkosi Buthelezi said he could not comment on the allegations as he was just "hearing about them" for the first time from Sowetan.

He referred this newspaper to IFP Ulundi regional chairperson Sibusiso Mathabela. But Mathabela was not available for comment.

Meanwhile, the IFP national executive committee announced yesterday that it has banned the group which calls itself self protection units (SPUs) from its premises and functions.

The party also called on IFP members to refrain from associating themselves with SPUs as they "declared themselves enemies of the IFP".
