Cope members defect to DA

ABOUT 30 members of the Congress of the People have defected to the Democratic Alliance

DA MEC for housing Bonginkosi Madikizela, a former UDM member, and DA MP Masizole Mnqasela, who is embroiled in a court case over an alleged rape, held a welcoming ceremony for the new arrivals at the Ruth First Community Hall in Philippi.

Madikizela said he was thrilled to welcome the new members to his party but cautioned that the DA also had internal problems.

"The difference with us is that we don't go on the streets with our problems. We call each other to a meeting and resolve them," he said.

"We welcome you to give us a bigger black voice in the party to address our needs and problems.

"The ANC is worried because more black people are proudly joining the DA. If we can instil fear in the ANC at a national level it means we are a force to be reckoned with."

Madikizela boasted that the DA was cool, sexy and relevant for all the people of South Africa.

One of the new DA members, Philiswa Maarman, said: "I joined the DA because it is the future of South Africa.

"I don't see any party that holds to the highest principles of democracy like the DA. Every day we witness corruption and political infighting in the government and this puts our country on a sad pedestal," she said.

Maartman said she left Cope because of the infighting and lack of political vision.

"I was a member of the zonal youth structure and regional task team. I left because people are fighting over positions," she said.

Another new DA member, Nomfuneko Mati, said "in Cope we were sidelined most of the time".

"The DA is transparent. Our views are accommodated."

A Cope provincial leader, who asked to remain anonymous, said Maarman had slept with an MEC in the provincial government and was then given a government job.

Maarman said the affair with the MEC happened long before she became a provincial minister.
