Sixteen to be sentenced

IT'S D-day for 16 members of the community in Sekiming, outside Mokopane, who are expected to be sentenced today in the Mahwelereng magistrate's court.

The 16 were convicted on July 29 after they were found guilty of public violence. They were part of an activist group known as Jubilee Mokopane, who stood up to Anglo-Platinum and a local Section 21 company. The community members initially had 27 charges brought against them.

But the court only found them guilty of public violence. They were accused of, among other things, arson, housebreaking, assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm and damage to property.

The stand-off between the community and Anglo-Platinum dates back several years.

The company had established Section 21 companies in villages in areas where it was mining platinum in a "deliberate attempt to divide communities ... to easily impose its mining operations".

Yesterday Jubilee Mokopane coordinator Phillipos Dolo said community members from around Mapela and Mokopane would be in court today to protest the "repression perpetrated by Anglo-Platinum and the police".
