The late Patrick "Ace" Ntsoelengoe was one of the greatest players to have emerged in South Africa and his legacy lives on in the courage, resilience, persistence and determination he showed as a player.
These were the words of Mogale City Local Municipality executive mayor Koketso Seerane at the launch of the Ace Ntsoelengoe Schools Sport Tournament at Teaspoen and Tankard in Muldersdrift, Mogale City, on Friday night.
The tournament, which will run from tomorrow to July 19, comprises 83 primary and secondary schools from the area. They will compete in soccer and netball in the Under-13 and Under-17 leagues.
Next year it will be a regional event and in 2010 the tournament, which is staged in partnership with the district education department and the South African Schools Football Association, will go nationally.
Other sporting codes will also be considered next year.
The tournament is part of the Patrick Ace Ntsoelengoe Foundation (PANF), which was formed in 2006 to keep the memory of the legendary player alive.
"Ace was an inspiring, dedicated and excellent player and it gives me great pleasure to formally launch this ground-breaking initiative tonight," Seerane said.
"The PANF aims to enhance raw talent that will carry Ntsoelengoe's legacy and history in this country and also to promote and advance soccer development in South Africa. The PANF will assist national programmes in addressing drugs, teenage pregnancy, HIV/Aids and life skills management among the youth."
