KwaZulu-Natal MEC for public works, Lydia Johnson, pictured, has been taken to task by emerging construction workers in KwaZulu-Natal at a meeting with BEE contractors and consultants. The workers complained on Friday about the shortcomings in the department.
Welcome Mthimkhulu, a local contractor, accused the department of sabotaging black contractors by only awarding them jobs in far-flung rural areas.
He also raised the issue of fronting and said it was not uncommon for white contractors to use black companies to get big government tenders.
Johnson said many contractors faced problems because they lack necessary skills.
